YMMV / Priscilla

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Were Priscilla’s parents genuinely concerned about her relationship with Elvis and reluctant to approve of it, or were they perfectly happy with letting their teenage daughter enter a relationship with Elvis in order to have proximity to his wealth due to his position as a world famous singer? Did they also use Priscilla's schoolgirl crush on Elvis as a reason to justify it, or were they genuinely concerned about losing her?
    • Did Priscilla genuinely love Elvis or did she see his interest in her and their relationship as a chance to get away from home and experience a high class lifestyle? It doesn’t really make sense that she would be madly in love with him after their first meeting; it’s more likely that she was just starstruck by him since she was only 14.
  • Misaimed Fandom: Some people correctly predicted that this would be an inevitability, given how incredibly stylish the film looks, plus the fact that the actors for Priscilla and Elvis are actually the same age in real life. After its release, there are people who upload clips of only the "romantic" parts or use photos from the film as inspo for their "coquette" aesthetic.
  • Nightmare Fuel: On their first night spent together as a couple, Elvis gives Priscilla one of his pills to help her sleep. She awakens the following morning to the sounds of Elvis' concerned grandmother asking whether she should call the hospital. Priscilla says she just went to bed but then Elvis reveals that she had been asleep for two whole days on a 500 milligram Placidyl and expresses his regret over giving her the pill.

  • Spiritual Successor: To 2022's Elvis, naturally. While that movie was focused on Elvis' life and career mostly from his POV, it's been noted this film could almost be seen as a Perspective Flip focusing on his wife Priscilla's view of the man beyond his superstardom.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Some viewers were disappointed that the film ends almost immediately after Priscilla leaves Elvis and Graceland. As a result, there's no mention of Priscilla's acting career, her life beyond Elvis, or her control over his estate after he died. It's worth mentioning, however, that none of the above is covered in the source book.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: It could be argued that Priscilla herself fits this trope when she marries Elvis. She’s definitely a victim in her relationship with Elvis but before she married Elvis, she had dated him for seven years. That’s enough time for a person to pick up on the red flags. She marries him and clearly expects him to be a normal, devoted husband, conveniently forgetting the problems they had before they got married, one of which being his prolonged absences because of his career. If anything, she comes across as being a bit dumb in her decision to marry him.
