YMMV / Prince Igor

Go To

  • Complete Monster: Prince Vladimir Galitsky is Igor's brother-in-law, entrusted with the safety of his sister—Igor's wife—and the town of Putivl when Igor leaves for battle. Galitsky surrounds himself with drunkards and deserters, seizing power and starting a regime of debauchery, violently assaulting the locals and molesting the girls. His cronies kidnap a girl whom he holds captive and rapes, despite her pleas and the pleas of her friends. Galitsky wants to seize the throne of Putivl for good, planning to deplete the royal treasury, punish whomever he wants in whichever way he likes, and rape all the girls he fancies. Even when Galitsky's sister tries to reason with him, he merely mocks her. The women of Putivl reveal that Galitsky has always been like this and has simply ceased to hide his true colors after Igor left. They admit that Galitsky and his men are "worse than the enemies, worse than the Cumans", which says a lot, considering that the Cumans are responsible for multiple violent raids of Russian towns.
  • Crowning Moment of Heartwarming: Konchak's reaction when he hears of Igor's escape. "Well done! I would have done just the same!"
  • Draco in Leather Pants: The audiences love Khan Konchak for his honorable conduct towards Igor and Vladimir, his loving relationship with his daughter, and his badass and good-humored personality overall. He still delights in Rape, Pillage, and Burn, but this tends to be forgotten.
  • Funny Moments: Igor's captivity scene can include these, depending on the singers’ interpretation. If Konchak looks less intimidating than Igor, his behavior may seem less that of a Proud Warrior Race Guy and more like: "I'm your hotel manager. Everything okay? Any complaints?"
  • Jerks Are Worse Than Villains: The whole plot is kicked off when Prince Igor goes to war with the Cuman khans Gzak and Konchak who are responsible for devastating raids on Russian towns. However, the character viewed as the vilest one both in- and out-of-universe is Vladimir Galitsky, Igor's own brother-in-law, who starts a regime of debauchery when Igor is away on campaign and plans to seize power in Putivl for good. It doesn't help that the actual central villain Khan Konchak is revealed to be an honourable Affably Evil man and Friendly Enemy to Igor.
Maidens of Putivl (on Prince Galitsky and his cronies): Worse than the enemies, worse than the Cumans!
  • Tear Jerker: Yaroslavna's lament.
