YMMV / Prez (2015)

Go To

  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: No, there isn't really a website named Sickstarter... however, a crowdfunding website aimed specifically at medical expenses and projects named "MedStartr" launched in 2012, three years before this comic.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • The Cat Flu Epidemic in the comics is a lot harder to read after the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, the rich billionaire refusing to actually make a vaccine as promised looking a lot like the time Donald Trump holding off on distributing COVID vaccines in an effort to avoid the issue. The Church of Wormology's anti-vaxxer stance on the issue also looks a lot like the Far Right's anti-mask/anti-vaxxer stance during the pandemic on grounds of personal freedom and religious belief.
    • Fred Wayne as a major ally to Beth did not endear well to The Prez’s progressive message due to questionable business decisions and scandals (such as acquisitions of Twitter, Doge Coin cryptocurrency, and Tesla Cybertruck) of Elon Musk—who may be one of many inspirations behind the character—that ran contrary to his supposed reputation as an eccentric genius tycoon. Also, Fred's technological marvel being an algorithm that can automatically create every possible written work has been controversial as its exploitation to copy works from real-life artists and authors without royalty payments led to both Writers Guild and Screen Actors Guild strike in 2023.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The meat-printer Tabitha has is capable of printing mammoth meat, having been used to make a burger thanks to subsidizing it with Elephant DNA. In 2023, a meatball was made from cloned Wooly Mammoth meat in Real Life.
  • Iron Woobie: Beth's dead-end job and dying father in a bleak America didn't stop her from making the world a better place.
  • Strawman Has a Point: The taco drone system may have been created for selfish reasons by Sleazy Politicians, who benefited from diverting food to them, but the news team and the senator did make a good point on having an automatic system where food can be delivered efficiently.
