YMMV / Predator: Hunting Grounds

Go To

  • Funny Moments: The standard mission control is voiced by Mr Sark of all people. He actually does a pretty good job, though, but he's also been known to exploit this fact to screw with randoms online and have fun with his friends. Hilarity Ensues.
  • Game-Breaker:
    • Berserkers. While other Predators die easily if a fireteam focuses on them, Berserkers, especially at high levels, are so durable that they can make short work of a fireteam with their powerful attacks without even needing to rely on stealth. Even their lack of speed doesn't hinder them.
    • The City Hunter DLC is this. Their stats across the board are extremely high, higher than every other predator class overall. This allows them a lot of customization before the game begins and grants a lot of leeway during the actual game. Even without defensive skills active they're hard to take down due to high health, their large stamina pool lets them jump in or run away easily while they can still sneak around fairly easily. The heavy customization lets them choose what playstyle they want as well, from stealthy hunters with absurdly high health to raging warriors with enough movement to get out of any dangerous situation to heal up.
  • It's Easy, So It Sucks!: A lot of negative reviews mention that the game is pretty stacked against the Predator player. One-on-one, the Predator can easily kill a fireteam member, but when the team sticks together, there is very little the Predator can do to them. It doesn't help that the objectives are easy and the NPC combatants are a non-issue, so the players really only have to focus on the Predator, whose slow weapons and not so good camouflage just make it fun target practice.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: The announcement of a DLC centered around legacy character Alan "Dutch" Schaefer, portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger for the first time since his appearance in the original 1987 film, resulted in a massive bump to the player base. The resulting DLC was favorably looked on, both for integrating the character into the game (complete with custom voice work by Arnold, which was especially welcomed after he was unable to reprise the Terminator in the then recently-released DLC for Mortal Kombat 11), but for having the actor narrate a series of audiologs making clear that Dutch is the Hero of Another Story — a human who has had multiple run-ins with the Predators over the years, but has overcome significant health challenges to become "more than human" as a result.
  • Shocking Moments: In the audio logs, it is revealed Dutch is not only alive, but actively hunting the Predators. Then came the announcement that he'd be returning through DLC as a playable character, and reprised by Schwarzenegger at that.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • The concept of a fireteam-based shooter centered around actively completing mission objectives while being hunted by a single Predator lends itself incredibly well to missions based in other locales/climates (such as an urban landscape or frigid conditions), much like similar multiplayer-themed games like Aliens: Fireteam Elite. However, this is never utilized beyond the same handful of maps. Even when subsequent DLC packs make reference to other locations where Predators were sighted (and the events of Predators even being integrated into the lore), no such map variation occurs, and matches still take place in the same handful of forest / guerilla camp locations.
    • Many agree that as awesome as it is for Dutch to be revealed to be alive in the audio logs hunting Predators, it could've outfitted a movie or a whole story mode to itself.
