YMMV / Prayers for Bobby

Go To

  • Narm: Some over-the-top special effects have a tendency to ruin the most dramatic moments.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Very much so. From Bobby's self-loathing, to the family's reactions to the news that he killed himself (particularly Mary's), this movie is not a happy movie. According to the real Mary Griffith, the movie was very accurate.
    • One Tear Jerker moment that doubles as a heartwarming moment was at the end of the film when Mary is marching in the gay pride parade and sees a random young man she envisions is her son, Bobby, in the crowd. Of course, it wasn't him, but she still goes to him and gives him a big hug and places her hand on his face. As she finally walks away from him, we see that the youth himself was overwhelmed by the moment. Also, it can be interpreted as Bobby still watching over his mother and happy that she has become more enlightened in her views.
