YMMV / Portal Stories: Mel

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The whole soundtrack, which is available for free download on Steam if you have the mod. Special mention goes to "Time and Time Again", the jazz track which first plays on the tram radio at the beginning, and later plays on the title screen showing the destroyed Aperture after completing the game. It fits in the 1950s very well, and the lyrics describe Mel and Virgil's story.
  • Crossing the Line Twice: True to its parent series. Special mention goes to some of the motivational posters you find throughout Aperture.
"Don't panic. The pain was only simulated."
  • That One Level:
    • The second test chamber of Virgil's testing track. Although to be honest, the whole game could be considered this when compared to the canon, especially in the later levels.
    • The turret section of the Final Boss. Not only is it timed, it involves carefully carrying and positioning turrets, which, by design, fall over very easily. Or get stuck on debris. And if you don't pick them up immediately, they explode, and you have to start all over.
  • The Un-Twist: Considering the tendency of Mission Control characters and allies to eventually try to kill you in Portal games (and even in mods such as Nigel in Aperture Tag: The Paint Gun Testing Initiative), a lot of players were expecting Virgil to betray Mel at some point. Him terribly imitating Cave Johnson at the beginning didn't help players trust his intentions. Nor did his insistence that you step in front of a live turret to test it. He doesn't betray you.
