YMMV / Porkin' Across America

Go To

  • Jerkass Woobie: Jim Haggerty is a neglectful and uncaring husband and ungracious and moronic host who causes massive harm to his family by continuously filming his show instead of getting back to them, and who is unable to see his niece before dying due to taking a deliberately slow route for his show and attends her funeral via Skype while continually disrupting it by speaking loudly in a crowded restaurant. But it's also made clear that he's absolutely pitiful, isn't in any way responsible for his niece's death and tries to help her before and realizes the depths of his wrongdoing in the last episode and begs for forgiveness only to face rejection, only receiving absolution by starting a new life as a pig.
  • Squick: Jim's gradual medical transformation into a pig as well as the absolutely disgusting "pork salad" served to him in Episode 5.
  • Tear Jerker: While initially played as black comedy, the series quickly becomes more and more disturbing and upsetting:
    • An early example, Jim's dog being put down due to killing another dog in the kennel, and him only being able to listen to his whimpers as he's executed. Slightly undercut by the hilariously deadpan "he's dead now", but still incredibly upsetting.
    • Arguably Jim's lowest moment comes when he takes an overly long route on a tour of New England instead of going to his much closer dying niece. He fails to get there before she dies, and most despicably, doesn't even come to her funeral but instead attempts to Skype it.
    • Jim selects the best pig with one with the same name as him only for the organizer to inform him he has to kill the pig himself, resulting in Jim breaking down and screaming at everyone in attendance for being murderers and walking off. Even worse, the pig is slaughtered off screen moments later.
    • Jim desperately begs his wife for forgiveness in the last episode, only for her to declare him a monster and refuse to ever talk to him again.
    • While most of the episode is a Heartwarming Moment and a Bittersweet Ending for Jim, the finale has him recognizing his co-host and attempting to speak to her, but being unable to do so due to his fractured sanity, only thinly mouthing out words.
