  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: Jonathan's favorite brand of cigarettes, "Moslems", was real, and they were 'break' cigarettes; required no lighter, but had a sulfuric compound in the tip that activated when you broke the end.
  • Awesome Music: The alternate credits theme in the Saturn version, which is a rock remix of the end titles.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: Perhaps it's not so subtle that Redwood happened to be Lorraine's killer. Arguably lampshaded, as the game starts dropping more and more hints leading up to the actual reveal.
  • Cliché Storm: When it comes to Buddy Cop Show tropes. Not that we mind, though.
  • Complete Monster:
    • Gates Becker and Joseph Sadaoki Tokugawa work together to push humankind into space to satisfy their desires for control and profit. With Gates as his hidden partner, Tokugawa created a Sex Slave operation where he had famous female celebrities cloned and used for pleasure by himself and the highest bidders. The two have anyone in their way assassinated; when Jonathan Ingram finds their headquarters, he realizes the extent of their evil: the two have been placing human beings in stasis and harvesting their organs while using cloning technology to regrow the organs for an endless supply.
    • Tony Redwood spends most of the game as a killer in a mask. When Jonathan Ingram comes out of a 25-year stint in suspended animation, Redwood kills his former wife with a car bomb, and later in the game guns down another of his friends. In order to frame Jonathan, Redwood murders a captive scientist with Jonathan's gun, placing him under suspicion for the murder. To escape, he also installs a bomb in a civilian shop so the police have to choose between chasing Redwood or saving innocent lives. Redwood takes the adopted child of Jonathan's partner hostage later and puts the partner in the hospital. When another operative fails in her task to shut off his life support and shows signs of performing a Heel–Face Turn, Redwood murders her despite her being his own mother. When defeated, Redwood opts to throw himself to his death, laughing madly, solely to deny Jonathan the satisfaction of taking him in.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Redwood dies from falling from a stairway to his death. Then, on May 9, 2000, Kaneto Shiozawa, the voice actor who played Redwood, fell down the stairway of his home and died hours later. Also, Tony Scott, the film director Redwood was based on, committed suicide by jumping off a bridge to his death.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The game's central character is a guy getting cryogenically frozen due to an accident and waking up in a future he has a hard time acclimating to, which is almost an identical set-up for the plot of Futurama.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Salvatore's death in the PC-98 version is far more gruesome than in the console versions. When defeated, he suddenly gets hanged by the steel cords and electrocuted.
  • That One Puzzle: The notorious bomb-defusing sequence at the end of Act 2.
  • The Un-Twist: Jonathan thinks he's stumbled onto Tokugawa's illegal drug ring. In reality, the drugs are just the tip of iceberg. The real secret is that he's trafficking in humans to farm their organs.
  • Values Dissonance: The ability to grope the female characters is generally viewed as weird and creepy in the West, but was so well-received in Japan that more such sequences were added each time the game was ported.
