YMMV / Pokémon: The Power of Us

Go To

  • Crossover Ship: Risa is shipped with Emma Verde in certain crossover fan arts on DeviantArt as well as in the Tokimeki PokéLive! and TwinBee fanfic series.
  • Even Better Sequel: Early reception from people who saw the movie, such as Dogasu and Callum 'Canipa' May, has been extremely positive, calling this one of the best movies of the franchise for its far different take on a Pokémon movie, brisk pacing, and good human cast among other reasons. The dub is well-praised too, mostly sticking to the original Japanese script. It's also one of only two Pokémon movies to have a "Fresh" rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the other being the live-action Pokémon Detective Pikachu.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • Improved Second Attempt: The Team Rocket Trio are better utilized and actually serve a purpose in the plot, compared to the last film where they were entirely irrelevant and The Artifact.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: One of the few criticisms of the movie is that Zeraora's arc is yet another rehash of the "Legendary Pokémon distrustful of human that Ash wins over" plot previously used for Mewtwo, Lucario, Arceus, Genesect, and Volcanion. It stands out in a movie that generally breaks away from the usual Pokémon movie formula.
  • Memetic Mutation: Ash got moe.note
  • Narm Charm: The phrase "Pokémon Power" made quite a few people laugh. The fact that it's repeated a lot in the third act doesn't help. Even in-universe, it's acknowledged as being incredibly cheesy. It still ends up working to inspire the group into action. Plus, it does sound like something a young boy would say.
  • Older Than They Think: Some people criticized the movie due to Ash not using any Pokémon besides Pikachu. However, there have been many instances in the past Non-Serial Movie installments where in spite of having a full team, Ash only ended up using Pikachu for the majority of the plot, with the rest of his team relegated only to cameos in the opening and/or ending or a token appearance while getting no action to their name.
  • Signature Scene: Sudowoodo becoming swole.
  • Special Effect Failure: While much of the movie is beautifully animated, some crowd scenes have rather awkward 3-D models that really stick out.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: In the English trailer for the movie, rather than "The Power of One" or Lugia's dub theme, the nostalgic piece of music heard is Lugia's Japanese theme. It's a strange recursive example where the original song is this to what replaced it.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • Some fans felt this way about none of Ash's Pokémon aside from Pikachu appearing in the movie, given the last film featured Charizard in a prominent role and implied that Ash would capture Heracross in the closing credits. Similarly, none of the characters from Pokémon: I Choose You! reportedly appear or are alluded to in this movie. Other people, however, have argued that this prevents them from being glorified cameos or overshadowing the human cast.
    • Similarly there are those who feel that if the movies were going to continue with an alternate continuity then Verity and Sorrel shouldn't have been Put on a Bus in the previous film and instead become permanent fixtures to Ash's group in this continuity.
    • Lugia's lack of screentime for some, as it only shows up at the very end.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: We get a flashback to the death of Harriet's Snubbull, in which it is seen being swallowed up by a fiery explosion.
