• Ass Pull: The episode completely fails to justify Ash giving away Primeape. Anthony promises to help Primeape get stronger, but as a Pokémon trainer, helping Pokémon get stronger is Ash's job. No logical explanation is ever given as to why Ash couldn't adequately train Primeape himself.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: The name of the fighting competition is P-1 Grand Prix.
• They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Ash finally starts using Primeape, who shows a surprising amount of character development from his debut as he and Ash bond and learn to trust one another. This, combined with his amazing fighting skills make him seem like he's about to become a key member of Ash's team going forward... and then he gives him away to Anthony, never to be seen again.
