• Crosses the Line Twice: Pikachu's disappointment that Meowth didn't die is as jerkish as it is hilarious.
• Franchise Original Sin: Gyarados is the first of many Pokemon that the Team Rocket trio acquires only to lose it shortly afterwards, keeping their numbers low.
• Fridge Horror: Ash and the gang never return to Vermillion City, which means they never learn they were pronounced dead, and Vermillion's Officer Jenny never learns they survived. One can only imagine the heartbreak Ash, Misty and Brock's families went through when told they were lost at sea, only exacerbated since Misty and Brock don't encounter their families for a long time afterwards.
• Narm: For those who have played the games, Misty being horrified by Gyarados preparing to hit the raft with Dragon Rage comes off as silly since Dragon Rage isn't exactly that strong of an attack. And even though it is shown to be legitimately dangerous going off the anime's own train of logic, the sight of all the Gyarados spinning around and forming a tornado while maintaining the same pose still makes for a silly image.
• Nightmare Fuel: Ash's nightmare Imagine Spot of reaching an impassable door below the water and drowning as the fantasy fades out.
  • That's to say nothing of the entire squad being trapped thousands of meters below the surface inside a wreck standing atop a seamount which will either collapse or run out of oxygen before very long. One must assume someone on the staff saw The Poseidon Adventure.
