• Hilarious in Hindsight: We learn a few things about Tyler when we first meet him. He has a Piplup which he has nicknamed, an act that isn't common among the anime's trainers, and he made a decision to catch the first Pokémon he saw on his travels. In addition, Yanma is well known among fans as an example of a Pokémon that a trainer lost to antagonists and that never returned to him. These aspects coincide oddly well (though without the dark implications) with the three most popular rules of a Pokémon Nuzlocke challenge, the first and most famous example of which occurred two years after this episode aired.
• One-Scene Wonder: Chimchar and Buizel with the former being taken down by Jessie's Yanma/Yanmega and the latter stomping the Ogre Darner Pokémon when Team Rocket tries to kidnap the second Yanma Tyler's trying to catch.
