• Moral Event Horizon: Not that Hunter J was incredibly nice before, but this two part special especially this episode cements her as a nasty piece of work. Between burning an entire forest down solely to find Riolu, attempting to kill Ash multiple times throughout the episode by using her Salamence's Hyper Beam, using her Drapion's claws to squeeze him to death once he got on her airbase, and dropping him from a height that would undoubtedly kill him if he wasn't saved by Kellyn. Keep in mind that Ash is only TEN.
• Heartwarming in Hindsight: For those who were disappointed that Ash didn't capture Riolu in this special, over ten years later he would get his very own Riolu in the 2019 anime series.
• They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Riolu's desire to go back to his kingdom aside, many were disappointed Ash didn't capture Riolu especially the way they bonded in the special and how Ash's Aura abilities were a perfect match with Riolu's.
• What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: Its hard to consider this episode kid friendly given all that happens. Between Riolu getting kidnapped and being sold on the black market, Ash nearly dying multiple times on screen thanks to J trying to kill him, its easy to consider this episode unsafe for children to watch.
