• Broken Base: To this day, this episode divides the fanbase as the tipping point of Paul's abuse toward Chimchar and the type of punishment his actions warranted. Certain fans remain outraged that Paul could even keep his trainer's license after putting poor Chimchar through such appalling abuse, and refuse to accept the gradual Character Development the character ultimately received. Others argue that Paul's continued role in the series simply makes for a better, more engaging story in the end, and that Paul's true karma (losing to the now-evolved Infernape in the Sinnoh League) is the most fitting punishment for him regardless.
• Moment of Awesome: After Paul's Rage Quit, Ash manages to turn the battle around single handily, winning against a Zangoose and a frigging Metagross with only the already badly injured Chimchar and Turtwig. This alone pretty much eliminates any doubt about who's the better trainer of the two.
• Nightmare Fuel: Zangoose's Nightmare Face when it pins Chimchar to the ground to stop his attempted Flame Wheel. No wonder the poor Fire-type undergoes a Heroic BSoD when he looks up…
• Signature Scene: The two most remembered scenes of this episode are Paul deciding to silently turn his back on the battle and then releasing Chimchar.
• The Woobie: Dear God, Chimchar...
