YMMV / Pokémon Desolation

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Which came first, Connor being a total asshole to everyone, or Emily constantly kicking him down?
  • Awesome Music: In addition to remixes from GlitchxCity, the game borrows tracks from other titles like Final Fantasy VII, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, and NieR to create its soundtrack, to generally great effect. There's also a number of original tracks by team member Darius, all of which are excellent.
  • Funny Moments: At one point in a side quest, Garret tries to punch his way through a steel shutter. It goes exactly how you'd expect.
  • Growing the Beard: The game improves noticeably after the fifth badge, specifically when the twist about the Dreamscape is revealed. It completely recontextualizes everything you thought you knew, and changes the plot from a fairly formulaic Pokémon story about evil teams into a more interesting concept with a heavy dose of Mind Screw.
  • That One Boss: This game is a great deal more difficult that your standard Pokémon title overall, but special shout-outs go to these handful of fights.
    • The first fight with Shiv. He leads with an Aipom that knows Tail Slap, which if it lands more than two hits (and it probably will), can easily one-shot any of your mons from full.
    • Emily. She leads with a Galvantula holding Focus Sash, meaning it's basically guaranteed to get up Sticky Web and slow down your team. Her Pokémon are not only buffed by the Electric Terrain, but many of them know Charge Beam which boosts their offense even further, and also have coverage moves like Grass Knot which means your Ground types aren't safe.
    • Rosetta's field buffs the attacks of her Fairy type Pokémon, which makes her Mega Gardevoir's attacks deal absurd damage. It also has the benefit of letting her Alolan Ninetales set up Aurora Veil without even using hail. She also leads with a Klefki which will set up Spikes which will chip your Pok&eacte;mon upon entry and give you even less breathing room.
    • Both Lilith and Aurora fight you on the Darkness Field using a Dark-type Pokemon as their ace (Aurora uses the Dark/Ghost Mega Mightyena, while Lilith uses her Dark/Psychic Perfection Umbreon). The Field cuts down their weaknesses and they're well-prepared for the one weakness that isn't nerfed by the Field (Bug). Both matches are very hard.
    • When you fight Tristan at the Waterscape Temple, he only has one Pokémon, his Lopunny. Easy, right? Nope. First, his Lopunny is level 85, and the highest level your Pokémon can be is 70. And second, his Lopunny Mega Evolves, which makes it Normal/Fighting with Scrappy, so it can hit Ghost-types. It's fast, it hits like a truck and and you're probably going to need multiple attempts to beat it.
