• Awesome Music: The electronic score, composed by Boris Karadimchev and performed by the Bulgarian new wave band Tangra, is quite well-done. Of particular note is the Wendy Carlos-style rendition of "Ode to Joy" that plays over the climatic scenes.
• Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The crew seizing control of the monstrous robot guarding the treasure they're looking for by... breaking out into opera. Even by the standards of this film, this moment stands alone as purely and utterly strange.
• Ensemble Dark Horse: Black Dog and Billy Bones are relatively minor characters in the grand scheme of things (especially the latter), but since they star in the movie's Signature Scene, you'd think they are the main characters or something.
• Genius Bonus: A lot of the jokes in the film work much better if you have an understanding of contemporary Bulgarian societal trends.
• Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • Aside from the Mickey Mouse cameo mentioned on the main page, there's also the fact that Flint's treasure in this version is essentially a Genesis Device. (In fact, the Bulgarian film was released less than a week before Wrath of Khan.)
  • Adding to this, while its Fan Nickname is Bulgarian Treasure Planet, the treasure is more similar to its rival Titan A.E.s Titan containing the genetic DNA to restart Earth.
  • Even further, the way that revived lifeforms are gliding down to a restored Earth may even bring to mind Evangelion: 3.0+1.0's climactic world-healing sequence.
• Quirky Work: Its incredibly surreal (in both literal and metaphorical sense, maybe in many more, even) style and atmosphere would indeed make you question Bulgaria's foray in the animation scene. Word of God is that much of this is actually intentional.
• Retroactive Recognition:
  • The film's director later went on to work as a writer, storyboard artist, and animation director on such shows as Johnny Bravo and Dexter's Laboratory.
  • Filipe in the English dub is voiced by Bryan Cranston, years before his fame in Malcolm in the Middle and Breaking Bad.
• Signature Scene: The chase scene between Black Dog and Billy Bones has become an infamous example of Deranged Animation.
• So Bad, It's Good: Less "bad" and more "weird". The film is so unrelentingly bizarre and illogical in the choices it makes and the scenes that happen within it that it loops right back to being incredibly entertaining.
• Superlative Dubbing: The English dub for the film is very good, and many would agree that some of the jokes in the dub are better than in the original (eg. When Billy Bones gives the bomb to Black Dog).
• Values Dissonance:
  • During the climax, we see people who bear an uncomfortable resemblance to racist caricatures of black people.
  • The English dub includes the line, "I'm sorry, Commander, but I flunked musical appreciation. They said I was tunefully retarded." Such a line would nowadays be seen as ableist.
• What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: The film features a surprising amount of bloody violence for what is supposedly a kid’s movie, not to mention sexual innuendoes, female nudity, and the aforementioned racist caricatures.
