YMMV / Planet Dolan

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Dolan in the "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" video — did he really have crazy adventures with a tiger in his boat and then row off into the horizon at night time? Was the tiger just a hallucination and the "rowing to the stars" meant he died of dehydration (albeit temporarily?) Or was he hallucinating, but still didn't die?
  • Awesome Moments: In the otherwise scary SCARY EXPERIENCES WHILE HOME ALONE, we get two consecutive examples from the redditors. First, Ghosttoast's story has Brave live up to his name by attacking his brother's False Friend. In the next one, Honeybits decides to Take a Level in Badass by retalliating against her Evil Ex-Uncle, firing a gun at him the moment he breaks into her parents' room. He survives, but is seriously injured and taken to jail in an ambulance.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Hellbent. For some, he's either the funniest member of the team due to his massive amounts of snark, or he's the most obnoxious for similar reasons. It doesn't help that he's often accused of being an Author Tract due to his constant shove-ins of his opinions.
    • Also for some, Doopie, though she did at least have an established fanbase prior to joining the Planet Dolan crew. Some people just chalk up negative reactions towards Doopie to bad timing, due to her becoming a regular member of the PD crew during a period of time where Shima had gone on extended hiatus on account of computer problems, and Melissa was gaining more popularity among the fanbase during said hiatus. Doopie's first proper animated appearance on Super Planet Dolan was generally well received, but it wasn't uncommon to see people still asking "where's Shima?" in the comments. However, she eventually involved herself with Chris-Chan and has faced criticism for it ever since, accidentally inspiring the Sonichu/Planet Dolan Crossover comic by Chris in the process.
    • Minor one but Nixxiom is this, due to his deep voice not fitting certain videos.
    • Shima Prime. Dolan and the crew debated back and forth on bringing Shima's character back and ultimately decided that it was safe to do so, as the original VA (whose continued silence was taken as approval) loved the character and the show, knew how beloved the character was to the fans and likely would have understood. The crew found a convincing (though not perfect) sound-alike, altered the character's appearance somewhat such as changing the eye color and made it absolutely clear that this is not truly Shima, but rather a copy with all her memories and tendencies. The two-part return skit raises more questions than it answers and there is still no guarantee that Shima Prime will become a regular.
  • Broken Base: The channel name change from "Danger Dolan" to "Planet Dolan". It does however hit Fridge Brilliance due to the fact the channel became less about Dolan himself and more about him and his collaborators.
    • The Dolan True Stories series has its fans, but it also has others who would rather see more fact countdowns instead. The constant usage of CAPS LOCK titles for the True Stories has gotten the ire of some fans. Some would even consider it clickbait.
    • The channel's direction following Shima's disappearance and the usage of her character for an extended period of time bothered a lot of fans, especially since the usage of her character meant she had come back when she didn't. While Dolan and co. have acknowledged this and as of late have stopped using her character, some are more or less still bothered by removing her from the channel's listings since she was a vital part in the channel's rebranding.
    • In the past, the fans had issues with the channel hiring more people to narrate instead of sticking to Dolan. However, over the years, the other characters and their narrators became popular.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: While cancer jokes are usually far from funny, this one somehow becomes too silly to be offensive: the question in the Super Planet Dolan video "What Do You Call a Male Ladybug?" is "What causes cancer?". Dolan says that a cancer is actually just a dancer who can do the can-can and begins doing the can-can while singing to the tune of the can-can song, "I can, I can do the can-can, you can do the can-can, everyone can do the can-can, can-can, can-can, so, yes I am a cancer, you can be a cancer, everyone can be a cancer..." then his singing degenerates into speaking and ends with him calling himself "The Cancer of Can-Can". Shima has an unamused expression.
  • Delusion Conclusion: The Planet Dolan animation for the parody of "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" has Dolan wake up with a tiger in his boat and have crazy adventures. Some people in the comments wonder if it's actually just a hallucination.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: PipeAttack. He guest starred as a host prior to the rebranding into Planet Dolan, and he was a rather beloved figure in the fandom, only to disappear from YouTube without a trace. Despite this, he was still beloved in the Planet Dolan community, so much so that somebody wrote a shipping fanfic of PipeAttack with fellow missing commentator Shima, which the Planet Dolan crew actually read out.
  • Epileptic Trees: Shima's absence has garnered immense debate over what happened to her: Some believe she quietly went into hiding due to stalking and harassment while others believe that Dolan and Co. ended up firing her and a slew of NDA was placed on her to not talk. A few people even wondered if she had died, although this was mocked, being turned into a joke that she was "murdered by Dolan", to the point of Memetic Mutation. This however was Jossed by Dolan during a video update on Super Planet Dolan's status and stated that the crew understands that fans are worried about Shima, as well as acknowledging the concerns people have with her status. He assures fans that Shima is safe based on their last interactions with her. Since then, no official reason has been given for Shima's disappearance. However, the most widely accepted reason is that she simply chose to step away from her fame due to anxiety issues.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Shima and Dolan, in spades. However Dolan's real life girlfriend is Golden Gooby, who began showing up in videos around 2016.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: A considerable portion of Super Planet Dolan fans have only ever watched the show because of Shima. For some, Melissa is also seen as Godzilla, albeit at a lesser extent.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: After weeks and weeks of viewers asking why Shima wasn't in the videos any more, some with more hostility than others, she finally returned for one episode, for which her dialogue was recorded months prior and ended with an explanation: her actress went missing.
    • Dead End Job is a bit harder to watch now that one of the members shown, Tolop, has actually died young not too long after leaving Planet Dolan.
  • I Am Not Shazam: During the 30 Worst Google Auto-Completes video, Hellbent jokes about telling "Hellraiser" not to cut his own hair, while the character he was obviously thinking of is named "Pinhead".
  • Memetic Mutation: "HAVEAGOODONE!"
  • Moe: The characters are all pretty cute, at least according to the fans. Especially in the episodes animated by Klowncar; she makes the characters look very cute and somewhat Animesque.
  • Moment of Awesome: In one of the Dolan Life Mysteries episode, Melissa gets fed up with Hellbent's constant Jerkass behaviour, so she punches the everliving shit out of him at the end.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: A lot of people seem to enjoy Pringle the One's voice, but the other members' voices also get their fair share of love.
  • Never Live It Down: Some people will never forget the fact that one of the lead artists for Planet Dolan, FroggywithFries, is a porn artist.
  • Nightmare Fuel: See here.
  • Squick: In "What Do You Call a Male Ladybug?", Dolan says that sweat is liquid oxygen and tastes good. He also gives Shima some of his own sweat to drink!
  • Tear Jerker: See here.
