- Jerkass Woobie: Beck. He loses his aunt in the first book, then has to move in with his uncle (who he almost never sees), gets hated for being a Pillage by his teacher before later, and is bullied on the first day of school. It gets worse.
- Just Here for Godzilla: Obviously, when a bookcover has a dragon on it, there are going to be people who'd read the book for the dragons.
- Paranoia Fuel: The magician can take on any form he wishes. Even your friends.
- Ugly Cute: The baby dragons (besides Lizzy) qualify as this.
