YMMV / Piers Anthony

  • Pandering to the Base: His Xanth series started as a low fantasy setting, distinguishing itself by having everyone have one tiny bit of magic rather than just one wizard having all the power. It was fairly standard in terms of being fairly dark, with the world being dangerous and exotic. It only took a few books for it to start incorporating puns into its framework, giving us exploding pineapples (pineapple fragmentation grenades) and eye-queue vines. Then fans started submitting their own ideas, and Anthony started including them and crediting their creators. It didn't take long for the books to degenerate to excuse plots that show off the dozens of punny gags with Anthony's traditional author's note turning into a long, long list of thanks to the various fans who submitted them.
  • Squick: His love of younger women is bad. And Eternity features a fifteen year old prostitute who seduces a judge in his fifties. Firefly features "consensual" sex with a five year old.
