YMMV / Phantom of the Opera (1943)

Go To

  • Ending Fatigue: The film really should have ended on the shot of the Phantom's mask amidst the rubble of his lair as the actual ending with its "humorous" antics just comes off as Mood Whiplash. This is comparable to the ending of Frankenstein.
  • Ho Yay: What do Raoul and Anatole choose to do when Christine chooses her career over either of them? Go off to dinner together.
  • Signature Scene: Claudin getting blinded and of course, the chandelier's fall, courtesy of Claudin and a hacksaw.
  • Squick: Claudin washing his recently burned face with raw sewage.
  • The Woobie: Claudin. In the original script he was actually supposed to be Christine's father, so he doesn't have "that" kind of interest in her career, but rather he's attempting to make up for the time he didn't get with her in her childhood. Even with that left out, he still loses his job, is revealed to be broke, gets disfigured by acid, goes insane, has to live in a cellar and eventually dies.
