YMMV / Peter Pan (1904)

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement:
    • It's often forgotten that Peter Pan began life as a play, before being adapted into the novel.
    • And it's often forgotten that while the play was the first incarnation of the Peter-and-Wendy story, the character of Peter Pan goes back further still, to his debut in Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, which wasn't even its own standalone story but part of Barrie's novel The Little White Bird.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • One of the rare cases in which it hits on something, since most of the people who consider Pan evil have no idea that early drafts of the story had him as the villain, taking children away from their parents.
    • Another popular interpretation of Peter is that he is actually a ghost or in some other way Dead All Along, since the script specifies that no one ever touches him throughout the play.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: The Clap Your Hands If You Believe moment is already sweet, but is even more so with this in mind. At the opening night, the crew, particularly Nina Boucicault, the first to play Peter Pan, was worried that no one would clap in this scene, so the orchestra was ordered to clap in case the audience wasn't receptive. Happily, they were wrong; the whole audience burst into applause when Peter asked them to save Tinkerbell, causing Boucicault to cry genuine Tears of Joy.
  • Special Effect Failure: There have been many accidents with the tethers during the stage productions.
