YMMV / Persona 4: The Golden Animation

Go To

  • Base-Breaking Character: Marie, even more so than her debut. Being one of the main characters has either caused her to be Rescued from the Scrappy Heap or given people more reasons to hate her.
  • Broken Base:
    • The series itself has not only drawn ire from fans of other MegaTen and Persona games, but from the Persona 4 fanbase itself. Simply put, it's either welcomed or viewed as unnecessary and another sign that Atlus is milking P4.
    • Marie's Adaptation Expansion in conjunction with the Investigation Team being Out of Focus. Marie now takes part in all the new events that got added in the Golden expansion. Again, this really comes down to how much a viewer likes Marie.
  • Cry for the Devil: While it's made clear that Adachi's actions are still reprehensible, Episodes 6 and 7 actually portray him in a more sympathetic light by fleshing out his backstory showing how he was once a hard-working student who had no time to make friends of his own. Despite his effort and encouragement from his superiors that he may succeed, he ends up getting passed over in favour of younger and more talented detectives, leaving him posted in Inaba. At first, it seems like he's thrown a bone by befriending the Dojimas, only to quickly feel his place in the family threatened when Yu arrived in town. Now Adachi has to watch as Yu and his friends find happiness while he's gotten nothing in return for all his hard work invested in his youth, so it's no wonder he's so bitter.
  • Die for Our Ship: Due to the No Hugging, No Kissing decision made to the previous anime and the Persona 4: Arena series in order to avoid Ship-to-Ship Combat, fans were livid when this anime more or less made Marie Yu's bonafide Love Interest.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Even the anime's detractors can agree that Adachi was a good part in the anime.
  • Growing the Beard: The first few episodes were seen as a bit lackluster with nothing new, and the Marie stuff largely overshadowed everything else. Episode 6 though gave us some info on Adachi, as well as showing things from his perspective. Then episode 7 came around and Narukami fought Adachi, quickly earning praise from fans for being the best fight in both anime adaptions.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In episode 8, while Naoto is left wondering as to why Yu asked if she was available on Christmas, her initial theory is that Yu is trying to kill her, with the Yu in her Imagine Spot sporting a trench coat and using a knife. A few years later, we get a new Persona protagonist who wears a similar-looking trench coat while using a dagger-like knife as his melee weapon.
  • Ho Yay: Yu holds Adachi by his arms after defeating Ameno-Sagiri.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: The most common complaint about the series. It's only about twelve episodes long, focusing more on the content added to Golden over anything else. Due to this and Maire being given center stage rather than being a supporting character, it leaves the anime feeling unfocused and hard to enjoy.
  • Memetic Mutation: Chie died. note
  • Narm: Episode 7, where Yu manages to defeat Ameno-Sagiri with Magatsu Izanagi in one hit is seen as this. While it was meant to be a Moment of Awesome, it ends of coming as cartoonish due to how Ameno-Sagiri ends up becoming a Giant Space Flea from Nowhere rather than an actual Final Boss. What's even more glaring was that Adachi himself put up a much harder fight against Yu.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Because this anime came out within such short proximity to the original, A-1 Pictures decided to mainly only adapt the new story and side material that got added to Golden rather than re-adapt the story in its entirety. This lead to half a series that felt like a Slice of Life series and a second-half that undergoes Cerebus Syndrome to focus on heavy story material for Marie and Adachi. Ironically, much like the first series, this left viewers feeling it was another So Okay, It's Average adaptation and wishing that a "complete" adaptation could have been done.
