YMMV / Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The theme song by Ludwig Göransson is far more epic than it has any right to be.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: Many of Hasan's jokes:
    • Just two examples:
Hasan: [refering to Jho Low, a Malaysian businessman who became an international fugitive sought for the 1MDB scandal, funding The Wolf of Wall Street] That would be like if Predator was directed by Bryan Singer!

Hasan: They ripped this jacket [a jacket that a NRA spokesman is wearing] straight from the NFL Hall of Fame, which makes total sense if you think about it. Football and guns have both given high-schoolers brain trauma.
    • In the episode about mental healthcare, Hasan talks about how former U.S. representative Patrick Kennedy embraced the issue after suffering a mental breakdown that led to an auto accident.
Hasan: You see? Sometimes, when you let a Kennedy drive, good things do happen. [the audience groans] note  I'm just saying, maybe take the bus?
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In the last episode of 2019, Hasan recapped the strange things that occurred that year, ending with the line, "For 2020, just give yourself a break". To put it mildly, 2020 was an exceptionally turbulent year, as it started with tensions between Iran and U.S. almost igniting into armed conflict, which was followed by Australian wildfires, then, the COVID-19 Pandemic spread around the world and left most life in a standstill, and anti-police brutality protests erupted after the murders of Breonna Taylor and George Floyd. Oh, and Patriot Act itself was cancelled.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: One of Hasan's last videos for the show was interviewing then-Senator Kamala Harris. During the interview, Hasan notes that during an appearance in The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Hasan actually endorsed her presidential campaign... a week after she dropped out. (She for her part seemed to found it pretty funny.) Just weeks after the interview aired, Senator Harris was chosen as the Democratic vice-presidential nominee for the 2020 election and the Democratic ticket went on to win it, meaning that she did win the election and go to the White House, From a Certain Point of View. Apparently Hasan's endorsements are really powerful.note
  • Too Good to Last: Even though the show received rave reviews among audiences and critics, the show was stopped after 2 years.
