• Rooting for the Empire: Vanessa Villela easily delivers the most memorable performance of the cast and many find her character more charismatic and entertaining than the heroes, to the point people would rather see her win over Monica. It doesn't hurt that she’s a knockout beauty.
• The Woobie: The telenovela is known for its high woobie count:
  • Of the main cast Diego is the nicest character and also has the worst luck. He's framed for murder, survives multiple attempts to his life, crosses the border alone, and spends most of the story being rejected by the woman he loves without explanation.
  • Emiliana is not even a teenager before both her parents are murdered, is pulled away from almost everyone she loves, loses all her property, and is finally poisoned to the point of blindness.
  • Valeria is a sweet, humble girl who is kidnapped and sold into the slavery to be raped by sexual sadist. The experience leaves her unable even to look at a man without having a panic attack.
  • Adriana is violently pursued by a mobster who wants to her to submit to him and murders her brother, frames her boyfriend for the crime and finally kills her but due to the soul switch, she spends about six months locked out of her own body and unable to do anything besides lament.
