• Moral Event Horizon: For both several of the characters and the audience, when Adolphe Steinheil has sex with Marguerite after finding out that he's got syphilis.
• Narm: Guerin and his followers singing a grotesquely antisemitic variation on "La Marseillaise" during the siege. It's probably meant to be chilling, but it comes across as comic due to the batshit-crazy lyrics and the fact that they aren't especially good singers.
• The Woobie:
  • Joséphine Berger and Hélène Chagnolle both suffered violent deaths after lives of constant abuse and exploitation.
  • The unfortunate M. Fleury, a nervous little man who was fitted up by Puybaraud, believed that he'd won Mme. Lépine's support, and then got set up by her as her patsy for the attempted murder of Puybaraud.
