- Badass Decay: Mercedes starts off as a dangerous, brave action girl but loses all her badassery as time goes on and she gets a taste of "civilian" life. She needs to be rescued repeatedly from situations she could have easily handled herself.
- Complete Monster: between mayor Costa, willing to murder anyone in his way and leading a baby-snatching, human-sacrificing cult, Nora Ponce, willing to pay a man to rape her half-sister, and Pedro Olmos, planning to stalk and murder all women of La Cruz for being women, it's hard to decide who is the complete monster here.
- Deliberate Values Dissonance: as befits a period piece. Practically everyone throws homophobic slurs at dr Ponce, and prostitutes were banned from ever entering the church before "father Juan" took over the parish.
- Harsher in Hindsight: The episode with Manuel Costa supposedly dying and people being divided into those who wanted to give him the respect Due to the Dead and those who didn't was re-run on the Volver channel on the 5th of March, 2013, the same day that Hugo Chávez died.
