YMMV / Overboard (2018)

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: When Vito is talking to Leonardo, he chides him for being ungrateful about his life since "You got a decent job. A wife who puts up with your crap. Three beautiful healthy girls." The way he talks about the children and chides another worker for mocking Leonardo implies that something awful happened in Vito's life that makes him want to slap some sense into Leonardo for taking his life for granted.
  • Critical Dissonance: The film has received mixed to negative critical reviews, with 30% on Rotten Tomatoes, but has been received more positively by audiences, with 78% on the same site.
  • Squick: Same as the original, an amnesiac is taken advantage of by their disgruntled employee, including abuse and rape.
  • Tainted by the Preview: Reception to the first trailer has been decidedly mixed, with complaints that it looks like a remake that will be inferior to the original.
  • Tear Jerker: Leo gets his memory back after reuniting with his real family, and incredibly hurt by the lie, he walks out on Kate and the girls, right there on the front lawn. He gets back into his limo, only for the girls to burst into tears and pound on the limo door, crying and begging for him to stay. What's already sad becomes devastating when little Molly gets on her bike and hopelessly chases after the limo... the bike her "dad" taught her to ride. That is not fair, movie.
    Molly: DADDY!!! DADDY, WAIT!!!
  • Values Dissonance: The film still has the same plot as the original; rich brat gets amnesia and is convinced that they’re in a marriage with the employee they wronged in an attempt to get revenge, including forcing them to work a hard, menial job, making them do all the work at home, and raping them under the false premise. The only measure that the film takes to address this (if you can even call it that) is to Gender Flip them. Which still runs headlong into this trope with the increasing awareness that men can be raped and abused by women. It was made in 2018.
