Award Snub: The album lost the Grammy Award for Best Album to Natalie Cole's album Unforgettable...With Love, a cover album of songs originally performed by her famous father, Nat King Cole. Out of Time is the better known album today.
While the album itself is generally well-regarded, "Shiny Happy People" is a bit divisive among fans, largely owing to the band's own distaste of the song. General debate revolves around whether or not is actually as bad as the band members say it is; interpretations of the song as a satire on Chinese propaganda are common among those who enjoy it, while detractors typically describe "Shiny Happy People" as suffering from saccharine.
Given that Out of Time was R.E.M.'s Breakthrough Hit, there's also lingering arguments here and there as to whether or not the band ultimately benefited as artists from the album's success, with Sell-Out accusations occasionally popping up (if not already directed at Green, R.E.M.'s first album on a major label).
The album itself is also divisive, with some considering it one of their weaker albums, and some considering it one of their stronger.
Critical Dissonance: While the album was popular, the response from critics was mixed.
