YMMV / Otaku no Video

  • Awesome Music: "Tatakae! Tatakae! Tatakae! Tatakae! TATAKAE OTAKIIIIIING!"
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: This work is fondily remembered for the fanservice that comes in the form of Misty May.
  • Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales: The series seems to be well-loved amongst those nerdcore anime fans who remember it. Although these also tend to be the type of Western fans who actually call themselves "otaku", something that is ill-advised in Japan.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: The anime was first released in 1991, and it shows; aside from the technology the characters use being very obviously dated to the early 90s, all of the numerous Shout Outs are to anime from the 80s and earlier.
  • Values Dissonance: There's a lot of disconnect between this 1991 OVA and modern day views on nerd culture and being an Otaku. While the characters' otaku-level obsessions may still be considered niche today, nerd culture generally isn't considered an underground corner of the cultural landscape anymore. This is especially the case in North America, where anime has become much more popular and well-known over time and "nerdy" things in general have become more mainstream (the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe being the most obvious example).
