YMMV / One Piece – Skypiea Arc

Go To

  • Ass Pull: Pagaya turning out in the end to have survived Eneru's lightning strike is often called out as this trope. Especially when compared to other Skypiean characters, Pagaya is just a normal civilian with no special powers.
  • Franchise Original Sin: Long side-character flashbacks that don't involve a Straw Hat Backstory started here with the Noland flashback that went on for 7 chapters. It didn't seem like much of an issue at first, but once later Story Arcs, like Fishman Island, Dressrosa, and Wano started doing similar side-character flashbacks that go on for many weeks, it became a much more noticeable pacing issue.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Eneru, a character who fancies himself a God, is stated by Oda to be based on the rapper Eminem... who would, quite a few years after Skypiea, release a single titled "Rap God".
  • Signature Scene: Probably the most memorable moment of the arc is Eneru's shocked face when he realizes that his electrical Devil Fruit powers has no effect on Luffy, who's Devil Fruit gives the latter a rubber body that isn't affected by electricity.
  • Vindicated by History: In the years since the story arc came out, while it was never considered outright bad, it was considered slow, filler-ish, and a bit too disconnected from the rest of the story, since the events of the Skypiea arc hardly factored into the subsequent story arcs. However, since the Marineford War and the New World Sagas began to reincorporate elements from the Skypiea arc, people have begun to look back at Skypiea with newfound appreciation as now they can see just how important it is to the overall narrative.
