YMMV / One Piece Film: Gold

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Has a great soundtrack with Gold & Jive (sung at the start of the film), Glim Spanky's rockin "Ikari o Kure yo" and the music in the climax being the stand outs. It helps in that Yuuki Hayashi for any My Hero Academia fans composed the whole soundtrack.
  • Magnificent Bitch: Carina is a brilliant thief and Nami's former partner in crime. Prior to the series, Carina manipulated a pirate crew that captured the two of them into making a deal for their lives, only to simultaneously steal all of Nami's treasure stash and providing Nami an opportunity to escape. Working on the luxurious cruise liner, the Grand Tesoro, Carina organizes a plan to take down Gild Tesoro with the Straw Hats. Faking a heist plan, Carina deceives Tesoro into thinking she betrayed the Straw Hats before having sea water rain on the ship, severely weakening Tesoro's powers. After Tesoro's defeat, Carina successfully manipulates all sides of the conflict to evacuate so that she can obtain her true goal, stealing the Grand Tesoro and all of its riches.
  • So Okay, It's Average: A general consensus of the film. It doesn't quite reach the heights of the previous film, One Piece Film: Z, and found to just be pretty standard One Piece fare. While the setting was highly praised, the emotional parts of the film are less than par the course of most One Piece films before it, the action isn't anything above the usual fare for the series, and despite being advertised as a "heist film", the actual caper is quite simple and otherwise not very exciting. Another issue is the pacing, which tends to be unsteady.
  • Moment of Awesome:
    • The brief fight between Luffy and Spandam is this, even though it's very brief. First, Spandam actually gives Luffy pause by using Seastone Chains and ambushing him by himself. Considering he is a weakling and Luffy is his post-Dressrosa self, this is actually kinda impressive. Then a child rushes in and saves Luffy, inspired by the Pirate to stand up for himself, and gives an emotional speech, plus the distraction Luffy needed. And it ends with Luffy, who had understandably forgotten who his foe was, as he mostly fought Lucci in Enies Lobby, ending the fight in one punch, which is cathartic as he never got to do so before and the bastard really had it coming.
    • Baccarat, due to her ability to manipulate luck in her favor, is nearly invincible, and defeats entire enemy forces with a single coin. However, Usopp outsmarts her by shooting a slot machine at her, trapping her coin and making her waste her luck on a jackpot before defeating her with a single direct hit.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • Sabo and Koala are just Advertised Extras included in the movie due to their popularity. Made worse when the climax of the film has Sabo getting into a one-on-one fight with Lucci, which they show absolutely none of.
    • While Tesoro is an interesting character, the film really would've benefited more if they has actually showed his backstory to get more of a feel for him, instead just showing an extremely brief flashback that doesn't bother to go into context (unless you have the Vol 777 manga which most outside of Japan don't). Likewise there are some complaints that fans wish they could've seen more of his powers in action other than just the golem and tendrils that he uses, especially in a direct one on one (He only briefly fights Luffy like this in the monitor room encounter).
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Rob Lucci and Spandam are stated to be carrying out some kind of mission for CP0 but it's never explained what exactly it is, barring the protection of the Celestial Dragons. The implications are that they're tasked with taking down Gran Tesoro somehow but never stated.
