At the time, it was the Goosebumps book that really delivered the monsters and in-your-face frights after prior books had been more low-key and realistic in their scares, and its success caused Stine to frequently revisit its formula. The result was a growing reliance on outlandish plots, fantasy environments, and gross outs at the expense of the genuinely moody atmosphere that the earlier books were able to build.
