• Franchise Original Sin: According to Troy Steele, this was the book that sent the Goosebumps series off the rails, even though it came long before when most people acknowledge its decline as having started. At the time, it was the Goosebumps book that really delivered the monsters and in-your-face frights after prior books had been more low-key and realistic in their scares, and its success caused Stine to frequently revisit its formula. The result was a growing reliance on outlandish plots, fantasy environments, and gross outs at the expense of the genuinely moody atmosphere that the earlier books were able to build.
