YMMV / Once Upon a Time S4 E11 "Heroes and Villains"

Go To

  • Badass Decay: Ursula has gone from a Physical God, scaring the crap out of Regina for impersonating her, to being just another dark disciple of Rumplestiltskin who was cursed into becoming a lowly fish-feeder.
    • The episode that reveals her backstory later averts this; she is just a sea witch that shares a name with the goddess.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Cruella. Some cited her as their new favorite villain, others thought she was incredibly out of place in a world full of magic. The fact it's been hinted in interviews with the creators that she may have magic this time around, while making her fit in with her fellow villainesses, is likely to split fans as well.
  • Broken Base:
    • Rumpel choosing power over true love. Some think it's true to the character, others think it's completely inconsistent with the Rumpel we saw grow and develop in the past seasons, especially in the Neverland Arc, a Rumpel who in the end would eventually do the right thing, even if it would be at the last minute. It either proves that Belle and Bae were wrong about Rumpel's ability to change or the writers are just lazy and didn't know what to do with him after they killed off Bae. Though it should be noted that the way he was brought back from the dead, and what Zelena did to him/forced him to do, is bound to have an effect on him, something he himself lampshaded to Regina. Whether this will prove to be an Author's Saving Throw or an Ass Pull Freudian Excuse remains to be seen.
      • By extension Rumpel teaming up with the Queens of Darkness. It'll either be the start of a brilliant arc, or it cements that Rumpel is ultimately irreedemable.
    • Robin's family being forced to leave Storybrooke. Part of the karmic justice that Regina must endure to atone for her past, or a feeble attempt by the writers to keep the drama going a little longer?
      • The addition of yet another curse on the town line—consistent with the show, or a plot device that's been done to death by now and the writers need to think of other stuff?
    • Hook being able to have his happy ending with Emma, while Gold and Regina have theirs snatched away from them at the last minute. He either earned it, or the writers are being ridiculously lenient on him, while putting Regina and Rumpel through a sick obstacle course, though Regina isn't the one deserving that out of the two.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Ursula clearly got some form of happy ending for herself - as she was worshipped as a benevolent sea goddess by the people of Eric's kingdom before the Dark Curse. Since Rumple refers to her as just "the sea-witch", she's probably not actually a real goddess; the mermaids and citizens just think she is.
    • Turns out she isn't even that; just a witch with the same name.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Rumpel nearly killing Hook for power in the present here and now. It's not going to be forgiven or forgotten by anyone in Storybrooke anytime soon. Once the truth comes out about what he forced Hook to do to the fairies (and the Apprentice), he'll look even worse.
