The film

  • Awesome Music:
    • "Falling Slowly" deserves its own mention, because it won an Oscar.
    • As does "When Your Mind's Made Up", especially in the Broadway version. The Uncommon Time alone is enough to give it a mention.
    • "Say It to Me Now" is a ragged, raw nerve, exposing all The Guy's emotions over his girlfriend's betrayal to the hard elements.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Try watching this film after listening to The Swell Season's album Strict Joy, about the end of Hansard and Irglová's real life romantic relationship. Also the documentary The Swell Season, where we literally get to watch their relationship disintegrating. This is at least a little softened by the fact that the two remain friends to this day, so it's obvious none of it was for nothing.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: John Travolta was the presenter for the "Falling Slowly" Oscar, and, unlike the "Adele Dazeem" incident, he had no trouble at all pronouncing Markéta Irglová's name.
  • Moment of Awesome: Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglova's Oscar acceptance speeches (and Jon Stewart letting Markéta come and speak later in the night).

The book

  • Complete Monster: Nell Quick is a twisted witch who holds Sir Russell Bleeth in a state between life and death. Thom Kindred, Sir Bleeth's son, stands in the way of Nell inheriting the Bleeth Estate through her lover Hugo. A sexual sadist, Nell attempts to have Thom raped to steal his seed, and takes Thom's physical therapist Katy, drugging her to enjoy sex with Nell before outright raping her. Attempting to murder the others in her way, Nell is willing to throw the balance between worlds out of balance with her only care being what she can gain from abusing and violating others.
