YMMV / Oddworld: Soulstorm

Go To

  • Awesome Art: The 3D models, textures and animation are all genuinely amazing thanks to the improved Playstation 5 hardware, managing to be extremely detailed while still being semi-cartoony without it looking off-putting.
  • Broken Base:
    • The game's radical departure from Exoddus. Some don't mind, citing that this was how Exoddus was originally planned and that it's essentially a brand new Oddworld game outside of the story, which is reused from the original draft of Exoddus. Others are disappointed that the game isn't a straight remake like Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty!, and would prefer that the game would stay Truer to the Text than the final product.
    • Similarly, how the game lives up to Exoddus is also widely debated, with some preferring Exoddus due to its improved gameplay mechanics like the expanded gamespeak, exclusive areas and enemies and having more levity, while others prefer Soulstorm due to its greater story emphasis, characterization and new gameplay mechanics.
  • Complete Monster: The Brewmaster is another Glukkon of the Magog Cartel who runs SoulStorm Brewery. The product his brewery creates is SoulStorm Brew, a highly addictive drink that is given to the many hundreds of Mudokon slaves in the other factories in order to keep them from escaping, as they will die slowly of withdrawal if they go more than a couple dozen hours without the brew. When Abe infiltrates the brewery, he learns that the primary ingredient in the drink is the tears of Mudokons, which are extracted by hooking them up to torture machines which give them electric shocks. Unlike his original incarnation, this version of the Brewmaster is played completely straight and is the sole individual responsible for the production and sale of the brew.
  • Contested Sequel: Overall, the game's reception among fans is mixed. While some consider the game to be a high point in the franchise due to its new mechanics, ambitious story and beautiful graphics, others dislike the game due to its broken AI and large amount of Scrappy Mechanics.
  • Porting Disaster: The Steam version is the lowest rated entry in the series Steam review-wise, many citing the large amount of bugs.
  • That One Level: The Yards. Specifically the crane section. The section in question requires the player to withstand wave after wave of Flying Sligs, either killing or incapacitating them while standing on a crate of supplies as it's slowly being lowered. While it doesn't sound so bad on paper, the problem is you have to be dead-on with the objects you throw at them, as being even a little off will cause them to dodge it, thus making it very easy to be overwhelmed with Flying Sligs from all sides and if you don't take them out fast enough, they pile up quickly. Doesn't help that they either have machine guns that can shred Abe to ribbons in seconds, or a rocket launcher that can instantly kill him with a direct hit. You can possess Flying Sligs, but only in very specific sections, due to the Chant Suppressors in certain spots. Many express frustration with the section, even on the Normal difficulty.
