YMMV / Octonauts: Above & Beyond

Go To

  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Fans are divided over Canon Foreigner Paani; to some, he is a likable addition to the cast, and to others, he is unnecessary and irritating.
    • Dashi; some fans love her expanded role and her being more of an Action Girl, while others deride her as a Spotlight-Stealing Squad who takes up too much screentime. Captain Barnacles and especially Kwazii being Out of Focus may have influenced the latter opinion.
  • Broken Base:
    • Some fans love Octo-Report and believe it to be a worthy successor to Creature Report; others think of it as a Replacement Scrappy.
    • As mentioned in Base-Breaking Character, there have been some disagreements over whether Dashi's more prominent role was a good idea or not.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In the original series episode "The Seahorse Tale", Peso mishears "Are you hungry?" as "There's a monkey". With the release of this series and the introduction of Paani, there really is a monkey now.
  • Ho Yay: Due to frequently having close scenes together, fans have taken to shipping Kwazii and Paani.
  • Moment of Awesome: Like in the original show, there are a lot. But the most noticeworthy are:
    • Tweak menaging to turn the Octopod into a Humongous Mecha to walk in the desert in the premierè of the first season
    • Peso rescuing the Baby Elephant and covering the animal's eyes with his bandages and the final of the episode where Captain Barnacles officially founds the Octonauts's brand new branch: The Octo-Agents!
    • Peso and Dashi rescuing the juvenile Raindeer from drowning in a flood in "Land of fire and ice", also, the titular Volcano eruption merges with the melted ice, a natural show, indeed!
    • In "The Hotspring Snake", Tweak, once again, get the spotlights when forced to turns the Terra-gup 1 into a flying robotic beetle to fly over a ravine, all while being in wobbly balance on the above-mentioned gup's roof. She may not be strong as Barnacles or brave as Kwazii, but she is undoubtedly worthy of being a octonaut just becouse of her wits.
    • A minor one, in the episode "The Missing Eels", Koshi returns and teams up with her sister Dashi and Lovable Nerd Shellington to find a trio of disappeared baby river eels, and the whole episode has a detective movie atmosphere, from the informer albatross to the crime boss-like tiger shark Randy, is both awesome and hilarious. Also, the Orcas scaring Randy after he tries to eat koshi and her comrades is fantastic.
    • In the episode "The Jungle Ghost", Tweak (again), Adork Able klutzy Tracker and Kwazii all gets one by defending a baby Okapi and his mother from a leopard and then repelling it by spraying Okapi's pheromons in the feline's face. That is why Kwazii is the first mate of the Octonauts and why Tweak is in the team. Also, Tracker is wothy enough to be an Octo-Agent and he shows it here
  • Periphery Demographic: Just like its parent series, Above and Beyond is well-loved by teens and parents just as much as its target audience of young children.
