YMMV / Oathbringer

Go To

  • Ascended Fanon: A partial example, but since the last book, fans have been wanting Adolin to 'restore' his Shardblade's spren. It doesn't happen, but after their trip to Shadesmar, the blade is now at least aware of him and he gets indistinct but recognizable responses from her. Her name is Mayalaran. He calls her Maya for short.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Maya, Adolin's deadeye Shardblade, almost immediately became one.
  • Love to Hate: Moash has become extremely popular to hate due to killing Elhokar right before he was about to say the First Ideal and begin his hero arc. While he was holding his son trying to save him, no less.
  • Misaimed Fandom: A small but still vocal minority have also gone so far as to demonise the Kholins and Kaladin, claiming they are in support of the treatment of darkeyes and purposely performing genocide against the Parshendi. In fact, they are the only Alethi combatting these stereotypes and were the ones spearheading a movement to make peace with the Parshendi in WOK and WOR. This even ignores the total lack of evidence that the Alethi even want genocide in the first place, and the tons of evidence indicating they only want to eliminate the Parshendi military.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Moash has had more than a few dark moments, but killing Elhokar while he was holding his son in his arms tops the list.
    • Amaram and Taravangian both had already crossed one, but they manage to outdo themselves. In the two previous books, they justified their actions by working to save humanity. Come the end of Oathbringer, and both have switched to Odium. Taravangian at least bargains safety for his city, but Amaram just accepts the plan to give Odium his army and fight against the Radiants.
  • Unexpected Character: Ever since Word of God stated that Eshonai was to be the focus character of book 4, it was generally suspected that her Disney Villain Death in Words of Radiance would be a fake-out. Turns out Eshonai really was Killed Off for Real between books, and Venli, her far more flawed sister, takes over Eshonai's role as the main window into Team Odium's camp instead.
