YMMV / OS-tan

Go To

  • Ensemble Dark Horse: In real life, Windows ME was hated for how unreliable it was. Her OS-tan counterpart is beloved for being an incredibly adorable klutz.
  • Fanon:
    • Due to several operating systems (Windows, Mac or otherwise) not having an "official" design, several fan artists have made their own interpretations of what their OS-tan looks like and how they'll interact with the canon OS-tans. Windows Vista in particular is the most contentious, as many have gone into arguments of which of their Vista-tans is considered canon. Of the many Vista-tans, only three of them are commonly used in some parts of the community: A Significant White Haired, Dark Skinned girl named "Vistake" * who wears a red Sailor Fuku, has a long Tomboyish Ponytail, and is sometimes seen carrying a scythe; a young-looking Ninja girl named Visbou whose always in a cheerful mood; and Chiivistan, a green-haired, staff wielding Magical Girl with two forms (a motherly, if perverted busty woman and a cheeky little girl).
    • As far as the Microsoft Japan OS-tans go, there has never been one based around Windows 11. A common interpretation of the character, especially on Pixiv, is of a little girl in a blue Sailor Fuku with silver hair tied in a blue bow to make it look like a side ponytail. She's often named "Ichika Madobe" to coincide with the other Madobe family and is portrayed as a Shrinking Violet.
    • Speaking of the Madobe family, it was also common to create "official" names for the Futaba and Nijiura OS-tans after Nanami Madobe was released, often including the Madobe surname at the end if their names to indicate the girls are related. A noted example is XP, who is often nicknamed "Saseko" * by some fans.
    • Despite the Futaba OS-tans and Microsoft Japan's OS-tans being separate from one another (with the latter reinforcing this by having a family tree of the Madobe family, which includes the Nezu and Shirato lineage), many have created scenarios of the Futaba and Microsoft Japan OS-tans co-existing with one another. This also alludes to the above example by giving the Futaba OS-tans the Madobe surname and establishing them to be Nanami's "long lost sisters", inadvertently (or deliberately) ret-conning the family out of existence.
  • Les Yay: With the advent of Virtual PC technology, pictures of Vista getting intimate with older versions of Windows sprouted out of the woodwork. Before them Windows 2000-tan was shown to have Yuri tendencies in hentai works.
  • Older Than They Think: Even though OS-tan was the first to popularize the whole "turning Windows/Mac/whatever operating systems into cute anime girls", there have been several attempts to personify computer operating systems prior to 2003, the year OS-tan was made.
    • OS Idol Win-chan was created back in 1998 by Sgt. Frog author and illustrator Mine Yoshizaki note  for the TECH Win magazine, serving as an unofficial mascot to Microsoft Japan at the time. Unlike the Windows OS-tans however, she doesn't seem to represent a specific Windows OS, instead being implied to be a catchall personification for the system as a whole.
    • TOYBOXART's iMac was also created in 1998 as a way to advertise the iMac G3 in Japan. The difference between her and the OS-tans is that she was based on a computer hardware than a software.
    • Chobits, a Seinen manga created by CLAMP, has it's main heroine, Chi, be a personal computer (called "persocom") in the form of a humanoid robot. What separates her from the previous examples is that not only is she based on general hardware instead of a specific one (be it Apple or IBM), but is also the love interest of the series' male protagonist, Hideki Motosuwa, which is a rarity for the normally Les Yay-laden OS-tan universe.
