YMMV / Nue's Exorcist

Go To

  • Americans Hate Tingle: The series is fairly popular in Japan, having a decent amount of fan art and endorsements from Kinoko Nasu and other light novel writers who enjoy the Genre Throwback. However, western readers are apathetic towards it, seeing it inferior to manga like Bleach and Jujutsu Kaisen which have very similar plot beats, and find it’s fanservice elements much more grating than Japanese readers do.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Gakuro, mostly for western readers. Readers either find his social awkwardness endearing and enjoy seeing him take exponential levels in badass, or readers will find him a very flat character who gets powers through Ass Pull and receives Character Shilling and rewards for things he didn’t really do.
  • Fandom Rivalry: One of the reasons the series is divisive is that it launched with (and outlived) Tenmaku Cinema and before Kagurabachi. Those manga were popular with western readers, but received poor rankings when compared to Nue's Exorcist.
  • Growing the Beard: Early chapters are generally accepted even by fans as being unfocused with the plot of each chapter feeling disconnected from each other, Shiroha's debut is generally seen as the start of the manga improving and her fight against Gakuro as the turning point where things really change for the better.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Quite a few readers thought that Karasu Tengu was male, to the point that the extras in Volume 4 had to clarify that Karasu is female.
