YMMV / Nowhere Boys

Go To

  • Broken Base: Replacing the original Nowhere Boys with the New Nowhere Boys in Season 3. Some thought it was the right time for the old cast to step aside and let others have a shot, while others were turned off by the departure of characters they had grown attached to.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Ellen, who ended up becoming an Ascended Extra.
    • Peta is also becoming this.
    • Phoebe as well, the reluctant Team Mom to a group of homeless teenage boys
  • Ho Yay
    • Felix and Sam, sort of - Although these two both show interest in girls throughout the show, they have a few moments. Whenever the group splits up, these two are always together, and Sam often defends Felix against Jake and Andy in arguments. Felix reassures Sam and promises to get him home. The two are a bit more physically close than Jake and Andy, as after Felix passes out, Sam holds him around the waist as they walk. Also this bit:
Felix: [wakes up to see Sam staring at him] Were you watching me sleep?
    Sam: No.
Felix: ...We have definitely spent too much time together.
    • Andy, Jake, and Sam all strip down to rather tight boxer briefs and swim in the woods together. That would be enough of an example itself, but Jake eventually climbs out of the water to go stand in nothing but soaking wet underwear and taunt Felix, who's fully clothed and sitting nearby. The sitting vs standing positions makes there be several shots containing only Felix's face and Jake's...uh...lower half.
    • Jake and Andy have some moments too, most notably when Andy gives Jake a love notenote  without any explanation for about ten seconds.
      • Episode 1x06 is full of Jake/Andy Ho Yay, including Jake sacrificing himself to the police to let Andy get away, and the lingering smiles they share once Jake's gotten out of the station.
    • In episode 1x01 (in the second shot, no less) Jake and Felix are seen sleeping on top of each other. In episode 1x04, Jake and Andy do.
    • By the time Series 2 rolls around, the boys have gained the habit of grabbing onto each other when scared. This eventually culminates in a scene of Jake, Sam, and Felix cowering behind a felled tree, Sam in the middle with one hand on Sam and Felix's respective knees, Jake grabbing Sam's hand after a jump scare and not letting go, and Felix clinging to Sam's arm the entire time. None of it is ever commented on.
    • Mia questions Ellen after Sam repeatedly runs off with Felix, specifically wanting to know "why my boyfriend has such a man-crush on your boyfriend", and the only part of that sentence Ellen disagrees with is that Felix isn't technically her boyfriend.
    • Really, the whole premise is Ho Yay-tastic. Four boys being forgotten about by everyone they know and love (including any female Love Interests), living an a shack together with only each other for understanding and comfort over the situation.
  • More Popular Replacement: The New Nowhere Boys who debuted in Season 3 all had a varying levels of Replacement Scrappy for the originals, except for Luke Hamill who took the spot of Andy as the nerd and became far more popular due to having a more fun personality, being a Pop-Cultured Badass, and probably in part due to being played by Kamil Ellis who had been garnering a reputation in ABC television.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The premise. Being completely forgotten about by your friends, family and everyone else you know, and your entire existence being erased. Especially as the series explores a lot of the Fridge Horror inherent in that premise: ie. they have nowhere to stay, no money, no food, and spend a lot of their time starving.
    • The scene where Sam tries to talk to his mother, and she gradually gets sicker until she collapses, and her skin burns when he touches her.
