  • Alternate Aesop Interpretation: The fact that Danni's story totally unravels once Harper looks at it with any scrutiny (given that Danni got basic details like the weather at the time of the attack and whether or not the tourist attractions she visited were open at the time wrong) could be seen as a commentary on the responsibility of the media to verify claims before spreading them, and how often they fail to uphold that responsibility. Just like Danni, many grifters get a platform because they have a compelling story or seem charming and draw in an audience. While they're responsible for their own actions and how their lies hurt people, the media outlets supporting them also hold some blame for not properly verifying their claims or presenting them critically. (Compare to the case of Belle Gibson, a wellness influencer who infamously faked having cancer and parlayed that into a fitness app and later-cancelled memoir. When the scandal broke, it came out that her publisher had been informed by a whistleblower months prior that Belle was lying, but they did nothing to try and verify her claims and continued forward with the deal anyway.)
  • Jerkass Woobie: Done purposefully with Danni who is effectively made to be both unlikeable and at the same time pitiable to emphasize the problem with cancel culture. While her actions are absolutely deplorable, the backlash she receives ends up being disproportionate, varying from people accosting her in stores, sending death threats to her and her family, and posting her home address online and encouraging others to harass or even attack her. All the while she was a lonely and depressed young woman who went from being ignored to being the most hated person in America with people calling her worse than Hitler and all because she did something ridiculous and had the bad luck to get caught in a bigger lie she either wasn't able or willing to untangle herself from.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: The film is just unbelievably bleak and depressing. Danni ends up with no real hope for a future, hated by everyone, and it's unclear if she learned anything out of it, while Rowan is now even more psychologically damaged as a result of the film's events. Coupled with the fact that the rest of the world is portrayed as full of assholes, it's pretty hard to get invested in the movie.
  • The Woobie: Rowan. God, her life sucks. She's left traumatized by the school shooting that killed her sister and is easily triggered by almost anything. Then she puts her trust in a liar and is called a liar herself. By the end she has severe trust issues and her life isn't any better than when the film began. You really just want to give the poor girl a hug.
