Iron Woobie: Dr. Monygham endured torture followed by years of solitary confinement under Guzman Bento's dictatorship, and after his release he was treated as an outcast by Sulaco's "respectable" society due to unfounded gossip about the reasons for his imprisonment. He nevertheless went on with his work as a doctor and when the time came, he played a key role as a messenger between Charles Gould and General Montero during Sotillo's rebellion. Monygham's bravery was largely motivated by his unrequited love for Mrs. Gould, which adds another tragic element to his lonely and troubled life.
