YMMV / Northlane

Go To

  • Broken Base:
    • Who was the better vocalist, Adrian or Marcus?
    • Is Obsidian a genre-hopping mess, or the band's electronic-metalcore fusion magnum opus?
    • Some fans were not that happy about Brendon Pasadjek's departure and the band's subsequent decision to not have a full-time bass player.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • With Structures, due to Brendon being a former member of Northlane and a good friend of the band even before that.
    • With Architects, for obvious reasons.
  • Funny Moments: The music video for "Echo Chamber". Not only is the idea of cardboard cutouts of the band members performing and walking around funny enough as it is, but there are also references to memes (the numbers "420" and "69" appear on the sides of buildings) and the Broken Base surrounding Adrian's departure and the band's change in sound. It's a rare example of Northlane releasing something that's lighthearted.
  • More Popular Replacement:
    • Marcus, to the fans who either started listening to the band after he joined or those who preferred the more progressive elements of their earlier work.
    • Brendon Pasadjek. He's much more well-known than the man he replaced, and his ability to also perform vocals alongside Marcus made the fans feel like he contributed more.
  • Nobody Loves the Bassist: They haven't had a bass player since Brendon left.
    • Averted with Brendon himself. He was already well-known before he joined due to him being the guitarist and later frontman of Structures. He's also still on good terms with the band following his departure, and the fans generally still like him.
  • Old Shame: Mesmer. The band has said that it was so much of a commercial failure that it led to them nearly splitting up. They haven't played any songs from that album live since the Alien cycle.
  • Revolving Door Band: Jon Deiley and Josh Smith are the only band members who have appeared on every release.
  • Signature Song: "Quantum Flux".
  • Spiritual Successor: Thornhill was considered to be one for a time, as their earlier releases had a similar sound to Northlane's more progressive metal era. The Dark Pool was also released the same year Northlane released Alien and changed to more Nu Metal and Industrial Metal-influenced sound. Thornhill changed their sound dramatically on Heroine, though, so those comparisons have stopped.
  • The Pete Best: Averted with Brendon. He was already a well-known and successful musician before he joined, and that's carried on since his departure. If anything, Structures actually benefited from Brendon's brief time in Northlane, as more Northlane fans started following Structures to keep up with Brendon after he left.
