Designated Hero: Kent Knutson, in addition to being annoying, commits morally questionable actions such as starting a fire and sending an escaped brainwash victim back to the people ordered the brainwashing. In addition, he seemingly kills several innocent people.

They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: An ultra-conservative dystopia that uses a device to prevent people from thinking deviant thoughts is interesting idea. However, this is only introduced late into the plot.
Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Saul is supposed to be the Good Counterpart to Paul. However, Saul invented the Mood Magnet and used it on criminals thus sapping them of their freewill. In addition, his actions lead to Paul to try to use it to maintain control of the dystopia.
