  • Base-Breaking Character: Akane, a character introduced in season 3/late in the manga who hangs out with the group. Some find her dorky personality and performance anxiety cute and hilarious. Others feel like she takes up screentime that could be devoted to the main 4 and that her story isn't that interesting.
  • Fetish Retardant: The focus on Hotaru's rather developed body is this for some since she is stated to be only 10 years old. This has even resulted in some mild Americans Hate Tingle.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Renge is a traumatized Vietnam War vet, according to some people on 4Chan.
    • Hikage has a habit of popping up in the background of (Photoshopped) screenshots, often hiding behind other cast members and smiling smugly.
  • Moe: The main cast, especially Renge, are a very huggable sort.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • Renge's teru-teru-bouzu costume, when the ink on the mask started running in the rain.
    • Renge's artwork. She puts it in her New Year's cards.
  • Signature Scene: Even those who've never seen it have witnessed the Collarbone Assault.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: The series is very laid-back and relaxing. It's the kind of thing you can go to sleep easy on.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Episode 4 of the first season, when Renge is told that her new friend moved away. We're subjected to her breakdown for almost a minute.
    • Episode 4 of the second season. Renge has to learn about the cycle of death and life sometime.
    • In the movie, when Natsumi and Aoi have to part ways after building a friendship in Okinawa. Renge clearly sympathizes.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Little Girls?: The series focuses on a group of young girls and their everyday lives in their idyllic little rural village. While the series can be enjoyed by any age group, the manga ran in the seinen magazine Monthly Comic Alive.
