• Jerkass Woobie: Max. He lives in poverty and was subjected to horrific abuse during his stays in various reform schools and prisons, and the financial desperation and general apathy he faces that ultimately drives him back to crime is palpable. However, he's still a criminal, and it's made abundantly clear that Max is not a good person by any sense of the word.
• Moral Event Horizon: Max murdering an injured and helpless police officer in cold blood. He then proceeds to cross it further by brutally killing Willy because he wrongly suspected he snitched on him.
