YMMV / Nintendo Switch Sports

Go To

  • And You Thought It Would Fail: The announcement of the game was met with nigh-overwhelming backlash from the Wii Sports fanbase for not having the Miis in a major role, and petitions to get the game cancelled were not uncommon. Eventually the game released, and it became a huge hit anyway.
  • Base-Breaking Character: The Sportsmates introduced in Nintendo Switch Sports. Many old fans dislike them and sometimes even the entire game for replacing the Miis as the dominant characters, as well as their limited customization options especially after the Nintendo Switch version of Miitopia had a virtually limitless selection of customization features. Other fans like the Sportsmates for having cute designs and some even prefer them more than the Miis.
  • Broken Base: Overall, there are 3 kinds of people to be found when talking about the game. There are people who like the game, and consider it a fun entry in the Wii Sports series, there are people who consider it to be just okay, and there are people who consider it a horrible abomination of a game that shouldn’t exist.
  • Common Knowledge: No. The Sportsmates are not "Replacements" for the Miis, as they are only available for use in this game and the Miis can be played as too.
  • Contested Sequel: While it's generally seen as an okay game in its own right besides a Vocal Minority, it's not seen as on par to the original games, and few people would say it's better than Even Better Sequel Wii Sports Resort.
  • Critic-Proof: The game received extremely mixed reviews from both gamers and critics alike, but that didn’t stop it from becoming one of the best selling Nintendo Switch games.
  • Fan Nickname: People tend to shorten the game's title to Switch Sports.
  • Funny Moments: There's a diving header move that results in a cartoonish face-flop when the ball isn't in front of the player. Since the player can do some moves during the "vs." intro screens of sports, a lot of Soccer games feature players flopping like fish onto the grass before the game begins. Doing this too many times in succession even tires the Sportsmate avatar out!
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: One of the chief criticisms of this game is that almost all of the game’s sports are reused from previous titles.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Videos of people reacting to the initial teaser have become extremely popular on youtube, due to their often comical reactions.
  • Memetic Psychopath: The Sportsmates are this among their detractors. From the moment they were revealed, memes started showing up about the Sportsmates killing and replacing the Miis, even though the Miis are still playable in the game.
  • Obscure Popularity: The game is one of the highest selling Switch games, but it’s almost never talked about outside of the divisive changes this game made.
  • Opinion Myopia: Due to the game's Vocal Minority below, it’s often assumed that the game was one of the worst-reviewed games or the year, and that the only reason it sold so well was due to Bile Fascination. But it reality, it has more positive reviews than negative ones on Metacritic (From both critics and audiences), with the real reason it sold so well likely being due to new players that never played the previous games in the series buying the game, as well as the gameplay being mostly the same.
  • Presumed Flop: The game is often thought to have been a commercial failure due to the mixed reviews it received, the hate it got from old Wii Sports fans, and the aforementioned Obscure Popularity. But it's actually one of the best selling games on the Switch, and consistently lands somewhere around the top ten most popular games on the Nintendo eShop of the month, to the point where it was the most popular game on the eShop for quite a while.
  • So Okay, It's Average: General consensus among people who don’t like or hate the game. Its gameplay is just as fun as Wii Sports, with the higher-quality engine making it even more fun to some. But at the same time, it also has very few new sports, making it feel like a glorified Video Game Remake to some, and the Miis are also Demoted to Extra in favor of the Sportsmates.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Miis being Demoted to Extra in favor of more generic-looking "Sportsmates" avatars was a huge disappointment for fans. While Miis themselves would show up a few minutes into the announcement, when Shinya Takahashi and Yoshiaki Koizumi demoed Volleyball using their own Miis, many fans, while happy that they're still at least an option, wished they were featured more predominantly. Especially since they're barely used in Switch games outside of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Miitopia, the latter of which had many hoping the avatars would make a resurgence in tandem with that title's deeper customization features.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: The Sportsmates often get this reaction from their detractors, being humanoids with realistic body proportions, and overexaggerated cartoony heads with flat facial expressions.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: Though the designs of the Sportsmates themselves are divisive, nobody denies that the game’s graphics quality is extremely high. The animation only complements this, as it’s extremely dynamic and high-quality.
  • Vocal Minority: From taking a look at the game's Metacritic page, you can see that it has more positive/average reviews than negative ones. But the people who hate the game are much more vocal than the ones who don't, resulting in tons of Caustic Critic reviews of the game popping up on YouTube, with very few positive ones existing on the platform.
