YMMV / 1989

  • Cross the Line Twice: "Blank Space". The abuse Taylor('s character) heaps upon her boyfriend alternates between serious and hilarious until it gets to the point that it's only hilarious.
  • Epic Riff: The backing saxophone riff in "Shake it Off".
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The reference to Taylor's grandmother Marjorie Finlay in the "Wildest Dreams" movie video is much more harsh with the release of evermore (2020) since the song "marjorie" revealed that Taylor has a lot of angst about her grandmother's death.
  • Memetic Mutation: "Starbucks lovers."Explanation
  • Nightmare Fuel: The music video for "Blank Space", and the AMA performance of the same. While it's played partly for dark laughs, Taylor plays Ax-Crazy surprisingly well. "Got a long list of ex-lovers, they'll tell you I'm insane" indeed.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Ironically, her announcement to switch from country to pop for 1989 gained Swift a lot of respect from her critics, especially when news came out that she was doing it against the wish of her label.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Dominic Sherwood as the love interest in the music video for "Style" for fans of Shadowhunters, where he plays the male lead.
  • Signature Song: Either "Shake It Off" or "Blank Space." The former was the leading single and got a lot of airplay, but the latter quickly went up the charts and became a favorite of the fanbase.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: The production on "Blank Space" sounds quite a bit like Leona Lewis' "Bleeding Love."
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not Symbolic?: In the video for "Blank Space", Taylor's character spins around an apple and takes a bite, with the next shot being her boyfriend spitting it out.
