YMMV / Night Life

Go To

  • Anti-Climax Boss: After being shaped up to be such a major threat in the first book, Anya is swiftly killed off by a shotgun blast to the head, courtesy of Davey.
  • Badass Decay: The vampires have become rather boringly mundane compared to the seductive but ruthless bloodsucking predators that they were in the first book.
  • Complete Monster: Victor Barna is the owner of a real estate agency in Los Angeles that he uses to cover his dark second life as a vampire and a sex trafficker. Forcing a porn director into selling his assets by feeding on his girlfriend in front of him, he used these assets to provide cover for himself and his fellow vampires, permitting them to rape, feed, and murder for blood as they please. He owns a hotel, where many of his captives are held prisoner to be starved and tortured, with some forced to star in underground porn films. When he catches wind of the heroes' investigation, he orders Casey Owen, Karen Moffett, and Burgess' wife, Denise, abducted and forced to star in his films to erode their willpower before allowing Casey to be killed and Denise released to her husband, utterly traumatized.
  • Nausea Fuel: The cold, clinical descriptions of the rape scenes just make them disgusting to read.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Barna in general, really. Despite being a vampire, the nature of his villainy is all too human.
  • The Scrappy: Moffett and Keoph are generally agreed to be the weakest link in the book, probably due to their lack of characterization.
  • Sequelitis: Live Girls is considered a Cult Classic. Night Life, on the other hand, is criticized for its inferior writing style, flat protagonists, usage of Gratuitous Rape, and unceremoniously killing off well-liked major characters from the first book.
