YMMV / Night at the Gates of Hell

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: David doesn't seem to bothered about the fact the end of the world has just occurred after Friedstein tells him that he has opened portals to Hell all over the world to assure the zombie apocalypse, just simply brushing it off and taking Friedstein's book to try and reverse what he did.
    • Another example being when both David and Stan enter a portal to Hell at the end of the game, neither of the two being genuinely scared, more just surprised that they ended up in Hell of all places and Stan just calmly asks David to read the book to see if there is a way to get back home.
  • Complete Monster: Father Friedstein is the leader of a Satanic cult who seeks to plunge the world into chaos, partnering with several people to help him open portals to Hell that will resurrect the dead. Opening a portal in a city that leads to the deaths of countless families, innocents, and even his own cult members who he makes into his zombie minions, Friedstein is last seen giving up his own life to ensure that more portals will open around the world, ensuring the apocalypse as an offering to Satan.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: The captain when he makes a joke about the cultists raping David in his cell when he was asleep.
  • Difficulty Spike: The game becomes much harder during the final battle, due to the large amount of enemies that can swarm you easily if you try to be a hero and do everything by yourself, requiring you to work together with your allies to survive.
  • Engaging Chevrons: The boss battle with the Flesh Demon before finding Friedstein inside his room.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Friedstein crosses it when he gives himself up as a sacrifice to Satan or self immolates himself to open portals to Hell all around the world in order to assure humanity's extinction via the apocalypse.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: All of the sound design for the gunshots and reload animations never fail to be satisfying.
  • Nightmare Fuel: David getting one of his eyeballs taken out of his skull after he accidentally hits a spike.
    • The fight against the Flesh demon with the odd type of decoration the room has and the way the demon looks and sounds as it tries to kill you.
  • Player Punch: Charles committing suicide after the player gives him a revolver to supposedly defend himself with after losing his mother.
  • Signature Scene: The scene where David is the last one left and being overrun with zombies, only for Stan to make an unexpected return after a fight with a zombie shark to save his life and tell David to follow him if he wants to stay alive.
  • Squick: Charles being breastfed by his own mother with gross sound effects playing over as it happens.
  • That One Disadvantage: Every enemy in the game can kill you in just a single hit by grabbing you unless you have a knife to save yourself with, but these are rare and you won't always have access to them at certain points in the game.
